I know, I know, I usually wait until Friday before I share cocktail recipes, but this has been a crazy week, and I had blackberries calling my name. I LOVE blackberries, and they’re wrapping up for the season, so I’m enjoying the fresh-picked local ones while I still can. So I whipped up a quick cocktail with fresh muddled blackberries, and a hint of vanilla.
There’s a little bit of prep to show you before I share the recipe, but it should take under 10 minutes to get ready! You’ll need to first make up some vanilla simple syrup, by combining 2 Tbsp. vanilla, 1/2 c. water, and 1/2 c. granulated sugar. Heat it in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sugar dissolves. I pour it into a jar or small carafe, and put the jar into ice water (make sure the water doesn’t get in) to help it cool down while I prep the rest of my drink. (Also – I make all my own vanilla. If you’re interested in reading about that, I shared a post about making homemade vanilla a couple years ago.)
Next, I juiced about 10 blackberries to get 1 oz. of juice for my cocktail. There may be a better way to juice, but it only takes a minute to press them with a spoon through a sieve, leaving the juice. You could just muddle them, but I prefer not to drink the seeds, so I strain out the pulp from the berries and just use the juice.
Now – with that little bit of prep done, you’re ready to mix up your cocktail!
- 1.5 oz. vodka
- 1 oz. blackberry juice (or 10-12 heavily muddled blackberries)
- ½ oz. vanilla simple syrup
- ½ oz. lemon juice
- 1 oz. club soda
- Add vodka, juices and syrup to a shaker tin with ice.
- Shake until chilled, and strain into a rocks glass over ice.
- Add club soda, and garnish with fresh berries if you like.
- Serve and enjoy! (And repeat in moderation.) ;)
As summer winds down, this is a great patio drink that’s got just a hint of fall flavor. Hope you enjoy!
