I’ve been thinking on some fun, sort of girly decor for Raya’s room lately, and as we were doodling a few days ago, I hit on a floral-themed idea to add a couple of inexpensive and lightweight mirrors to her space. It was also an “a-ha!” moment for me on a craft challenge I’ve been mulling over ALL month long. Today I’m going to show you how to make this easy DIY flower mirror set with FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Discs, some round mirrors, and aluminum wire in about 10 minutes each!
See, my friends at FloraCraft® sent me some awesome supplies for a September challenge and are sponsoring today’s project, and I have been just stumped about what to make! Not only was there a wonderful array of FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Discs, but they also sent some smooth finish (which is quick-drying, and allows you to easily paint your foam) and a cutting tool as well. Well, all these amazing goodies threw me for a loop this month, but I got my creative mojo back just in time to be part of the September challenge!
I picked up a couple of round mirrors, and in fact, this project would probably be even prettier with a couple more in various sizes! Today, though, I’m using the following supplies:
- FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Discs – 5 7/8″ and 9 7/8″ diameter
- 7″ and 11″ round mirrors
- 12-Gauge Aluminum Floral Wire (I used brown, but use what you like!)
- Wire Cutters
- Ruler
- Hot Glue Gun
- Saw-Tooth Hangers and Sewing Pins
A note about how much wire you will need: it depends on what size foam disc you’re using. I used 7 lengths of 10 inches each (70 inches in total – just under 2 yards) for the 7″ mirror. I used 12 lengths of 12″ long (4 yards) on the 11″ mirror. I picked up some 5-yard coils of wire for this project, and I was really glad I grabbed 2! If you’re sticking with these 2 sizes. then get enough for 6 yards of wire. If you’re adding other sizes, then you’ll need to experiment with how many petals each flower needs.
Aluminum wire is easy to cut and easy to bend. All you need are standard wire cutters. Then, form a doodle-y petal shape. As I mentioned just above, cut seven 10″ lengths to go around the 5-7/8″ FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Discs, and twelve 12″ lengths to go around the 9-7/8″ FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Discs. Poke it into the foam, overlapping your petals slightly. Push the wire into the foam about 1 inch deep.
You can bend and re-shape your petals as you go, if you like, or even play with other petal lengths and shapes. I was going for a cartoonish look for my flowers, but the wire is extremely adaptable.
When you’ve filled out your flower, then add a generous amount of hot glue to the foam, and glue the mirror to it. It’s a good idea to flip it over and ensure that it’s centered.
Next, you’ll need to add a hanger. You may already have a method you prefer for hanging, like putty or double-sided tape, but I already had nails in my daughter’s wall so I decided to add sawtooth hangers. To make them strong and secure enough, I add a big glob of hot glue to each side of the hanger, and glue it down. It will likely seep through the hole, and that’s actually idea. Then, working quickly, I push a sewing pin through each hole, angling it upward. I press the head of the pin into the hot glue, so that the whole thing is secured together. But angling the pin upward, the pins are actually pressed into the foam more as the weight of the mirror hangs from it. You still need to be gentle with your new creation, but once it’s up on the wall, as long as it’s not disturbed, you shouldn’t have an issue with losing any pieces.
She absolutely loved the new mirrors in her room, which are functional on top of being cute decor. I hope you enjoyed today’s decor project!
