Fairy Room Reveal

02/19/2014 Adrianne Surian 23 Comments

Well, I’ve been working on a labor of love.  It’s so difficult to get work done in a little girl’s room because by the time I have time to work on it, she’s in there sleeping. ;) So I’ve been tackling Raya’s fairy bedroom a little at a time over the last month or so, and I’d really like to share how it’s coming along!  My daughter asked for purple, and so…

…it’s purple.  Very purple.  (Can you tell she loves purple? Haha.)  We added a few fairy touches – nothing too overwhelming, just enough to keep it whimsical.  National Builder Supply helped us out and sent us new lighting to review – and when I talked to them about our theme, they suggested this amazing ceiling fan.  It totally makes the room!

It’s called “Bloom” by Craftmade, and you have to agree, it’s perfect for a fairy theme, isn’t it?  The flower petal blades turn both directions, and it’s got a wall-mountable remote control so you don’t have to reach up for pull chains to adjust it.

We had some debate going on about the low ceilings downstairs (they are 8 feet) and the bulkhead along the main wall, and whether we could actually add a fan or if it would seem to low or crowded.   But instead of getting in the way, it really feels like adding a fan tied the room together a lot better.

Let me show you the “before” – it was a blue-green color.  Even with plenty of natural light, it was always really dark in my daughter’s room.  Here’s what it looked like:

Okay, okay.  She’s three.  I can be a little more honest about what her room usually looked like.

Ahem.  But the thing is, with it always being sort of a “cave”, I didn’t often come down – just at bedtime.  But now that I’ve done some fixing up, we’ve been spending more time down there, and cleaning up is on the daily to-do list.  So not only was this a facelift, but it really reinforces caring and being responsible for our spaces.  It’s amazing what two coats of paint and new lighting can do for a room!  Raya is taking a lot of pride in it, after getting to choose for herself what will be in it.

We also added a custom vinyl fairy decal to one of the walls (though I’m still torn on how to handle the smoke detector – what do you think? Would just getting a new one be enough, or does it need better camouflage?)

We also put up some springy 3-D flowers along the half-walls.  I wanted something to help break up all the purple, and I was originally thinking some white stripes might be nice along the lower half.  But to be honest, I’ve had enough painting for a while!  Since these just stick on and are totally removable, it’s a great solution for the moment.

I’m sure if you have young kids, you know how obsessed they can be with their favorite things.  EVERYTHING is fairy right now, so she has been just thrilled with the whole room, down to the Tinkerbell bedsheets.

I have to admit, naptime is certainly easier right now.  Because we’re working our way through – you guessed it – an epic fairy book.

She’s been getting all kinds of ideas about what fairies do, and has been asking why they haven’t brought spring yet.  Haha.  I told her that they are working on it!!  It takes a while to come to Michigan, after all.  So, over the weekend, we even made up a little lantern guest-house for her fairy friends – so that they don’t get stuck in the snow while they’re working on bringing springtime  (I’ll share more about that tomorrow, if you’d like to see a how-to!)

Anyway – the whole room is just brighter and more cheerful, and it was worth every minute of work that went into it, transforming it into the room my daughter loves (until it’s… you know, ponies or something. Haha).  Thanks again to National Builder Supply for finding us the PERFECT fan to help tie the room together!

Well, you know I love the purple. The ceiling fan is amazing- I have never seen one like that, and now want a fairytale room of my own! :) I love the fairy lantern, too, very clever and cute.

WOW, what an amazing room for a little girl! I think any little girl would spend all their time in this room and look forward to nap time in their fairy bed! Well done! Oh, and I totally agree that the ceiling fan does tie the room together! :)

Love the purple and that ceiling fan is adorable but I think my favorite is the little fairy house with the bench!

Oh I LOVE how the ceiling fan fits so well with your theme and the room. Down here ceiling fans are a must, but they end up looking so utilitarian. This one is a true statement piece for the room, perfect for tying the room together. I don’t know a little girl that wouldn’t LOVE laying on her bed, staring at the fan, and pretending she is in fairyland.

I agree too about wanting to spend more time in a room after you have spruced it up a little. It makes so much difference to have a space that you like. :)

Actually even though it’s colder up here, fans still help a lot! Heat rises and the circulation of a low fan helps push the heat down into the room. Weird to think that turning on the fan can keep a room warmer, but it totally works. Fun fact of the great north, LOL.

I love it! My girls are fairy obsessed and they would be nuts about the fan and the book and that sweet little fairy lantern. You’ve outdone yourself, Adrianne!

Smoke detector… can you point it purple and make it disappear? :)

That’s what I was wondering… I wonder if they recommend you shouldn’t do that? I don’t know. I hate to decrease functionality over something like style, because heck, my daughter doesn’t even care. ;) I will have to read up to see if there’s a recommended way you can paint, because it does seem like that would work.

I agree about the smoke detector to paint it to match the wall color. The room is so cute any little girl would love it.

We have a purple room in our house too..I like it! The fan really adds to the fairy theme…who knew there wer fans like that?! I remember the fairy phase… We’re leaving the Justin Bieber phase and redoing my daughter’s room right now. She wants a fan….wonder if there any “glam” ceiling fans.

I LOVE the fairy guest house!! And I love that y’all are spending more time in that room…that is what making a house a home is all about.

The room is so very cute and sweet! Any little girl would love it (and maybe even “big” girls would love the color scheme.) Fabulous job! About that smoke detector–I think just painting
petals that match the fan blades around it would do the trick. I probably would do the same around the clock on the wall. Just a thought.

Oooh – you may be on to something there! That doesn’t mess at all with the equipment but may help it to blend. I want to get a new clock anyway, that’s the old one from her old room which was greens and shades of brown. I could even cut vinyl instead so that it’s easily removable and changeable as she gets older and outgrows the current setup.

Hi Adrianne, I had a purple room at one time too. Created a mystical room complete with fairys – imagine that! :-) I used little fairys from http://www.wallies.com scattered across the walls. They are prepasted and very detailed. I took a look tonight and didn’t see the dainty ones I had used but I did find them on eBay by typing in “wallies + fairies”. The best part is your daughter can help you!
