I know it’s getting a little late to share St. Patrick’s Day ideas, but I had an idea over the weekend, and there’s still plenty of time to make it because it is quick and easy! I love the intricately decorated treats, but it’s just not my style, especially in the kitchen. But dipped Oreos? Totally my speed.
I’ll show you how I made them! If you have done any chocolate-dipping before, you will find these really easy.
What I used:
- Oreo cookies
- Dark Chocolate Candy Melts
- Green Candy Melts
- Green Sugar
- Peanut Butter Cup Mold – mine is sized to hold a dozen cups
- Wilton Gold Edible Glitter
Let me talk first about the edible glitter. Yes – it really is edible, but it doesn’t really taste like anything. It’s very pretty, but it was also pretty expensive!! One tube of it made about 18 cookies, but it was $7 by itself. Find a coupon before you go shopping, or see what else you can find. Some yellow sprinkles might look just as good for a fraction if the price. When I picked it up, I was thinking it would go a lot farther. I just want to mention that in hindsight, I’d probably do it a bit differently so I want to pass my experience on to you.
Now, first step is to make your pots, and they are super easy. Set out a sheet of wax paper, and get some of your gold sprinkles ready. I just put some in a small plastic bowl for dipping.
I just melted the chocolate in a mug following the instructions on the package. I used about 1/4 of the package for this for 18 cookies, to give you a bit of an idea how far it will go. You could also use Candiquik or whatever other product you might like – I just needed to pick up the green melts so I picked up chocolate as well. Dip your Oreos in about halfway (give or take, it doesn’t have to be a precise dip). Now, touch the very tip of the Oreo into your gold. Then, lay it out on the wax paper to set. It should look roughly like these!
You can actually stop here, if you are in a hurry, if you don’t have a mold or can’t find one, or if you just don’t want to fuss with a three-dimensional treat. You’ve got your little pots of gold, and they will be ready to enjoy in about 30 minutes (to let the chocolate fully set). But if you want to set the pots in a little bit of grass like I did, that’s just as easy.
I melted up about 3/4 of the bag of green melts. You can either spoon the melts into the mold, or I find it much, much easier to put them into a squirt bottle and squirt them in that way. You can find “official” squirt bottles in the cake baking aisle but I find that the dollar store ketchup and mustard bottles work wonderfully and I don’t mind just throwing them away afterward. ;)
Now, at the last minute, I decided that the “grass” needed some green sugar. You should sprinkle it on next. I ended up spooning it on after I added the pots but now would be easier. :)
Then, just add your pots! The edges of the cup molds should hold them up just fine. Even if the chocolate isn’t 100% set, it should be good enough to add to the cups.
Your treats should be set in about 30 minutes!
These should stay fresh for 3 or 4 days, so you still have time to surprise your kiddos with these simple treats by Sunday!
