I love hot dogs. I don’t care what they are made of. I just love them. So, you certainly have to be a hot dog fan to enjoy this – but if you or your family are, you’ve got to give this one a try.
They are a snap to make – you can have them done in fifteen minutes, tops if you have leftover mashed potatoes from another meal. (Win-win – you can turn yesterday’s meal into something new, too!)
The recipe is a leftovers-recipe, so the measurements aren’t exact, but I’ll do my best for you:
- 1 package of hot dogs
- 2 c. leftover mashed potatoes
- mustard
- any other optional toppings like chili or shredded cheese
Warm up your broiler. Mine has a high and low setting, and I cook mine on high. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray or cover it with aluminum foil. Cut your hot dogs lengthwise – not all the way through, you’re just cutting a deep slit, like a bun would normally look.
Then, add some mustard to the inside of your dog. I have to admit, I’ve never even tried anything else, like ketchup or anything, but you can make the recipe whatever you want.
Now, stuff as much mashed potatoes in there as you can fit. I can usually get about 1/4 c. or so in each one.
Put them under the broiler until they brown. In my oven, that’s 7-8 minutes, but do keep an eye on them and check them every minute or so after five minutes so that they don’t get crispy.
When they have browned a little on top and are heated through, they are done!
I usually serve these with baby carrots to at least get something healthy in there, but that would require *yet another* trip to the store and it’s just been a crazy week around here. Last week everything was covered in sawdust – this week, it’s paint!
So what do you think? You may be honest right up to the point of lecturing me about what’s in hot dogs… but let’s hear it. Is this just one of those weird things that only my family makes?
I link up to these great parties!

When I was in school (1986 ish) the lunch ladies made this. It was a favorite of mine and I was just telling my mother in law about it. I’m glad someone else’s likes it!

Haha, my mom made these when I was a kid. Always a treat. She always put shredded cheese on top.

I freely admit I have never seen or heard of this before but I am totally going to try it out on Mr. B sometime. He loves hot dogs. He loves mustard. Mashed potatoes would be the frosting on the cake for him! In regards to weird foods, I will have to do a post sometime of his favorite that his mother used to make. Imagine these ingredients together if you will, bacon, katsup and cheez whiz…
Yeah…that's right :-)
Thanks so much for linking this up at the party this week!

I will definitely try these, I eat the turkey dogs and I swear they taste the same.

Wow, seriously?! This is one of my family's favorite meals! We had these all the time when I was growing up and now I make them for my family. We top the potatoes with cheese though, makes it that much more delicious. I think part of the appeal is we call them “monsters” I'm not sure why. Lol. Oh and they're great with instant mashed potatoes, too. Makes it that much easier and you don't have to wait for leftovers.

Okay, this may be a little weird, but it looks DELICIOUS! I love hot dogs too, but I've never tried stuffing them before. Thanks so much for linking these up to The Fun In Functional; I definitely have to try this!

This looks interesting. We eat hotdogs at least once a week in my house and the fact that you can eliminate the bread is taking a healthy twist. Nice Idea and thanks for sharing.

Hmmm…I've heard of the ones with cheese in them, but not mashed potatoes. My hubby would really like them, though!!

I”ve made stuffed hot dogs with cheese under the grill, but will have to give it a go with mashed potatoes. The trick will be getting some left over potatoes.

I'm not sure what to say, but for starters I've never heard of this little 'treat'. Then again, I've never eaten a corn dog and somebody I mentioned this to earlier this week was aghast. So perhaps I'm not the one to be talking about the dogs.
