Well, the Indianapolis Colts weren’t in the Big Game this year, which is okay because they had a darn good season – and at least we can say, they got knocked out of the playoffs by the champs this year. ;) But despite our team not playing, we still had a great Big Game party with our friends!
Like a lot of families, we are making strides toward healthier eating. And it doesn’t have to be a drastic thing. We knew there would be a mountain of junk food at our friends’ Big Game party, so our contribution was a smarter choice by design – low fat Turkey Sloppy Joes. I made up the recipe using Classico Crushed tomatoes, which are 100% natural, fresh-packed, with no preservatives, and we put out whole grain buns to go along with it.
As it turned out, there were a lot of us there trying to eat healthier, so they were a hit! You can see the guys in the back raiding the food, while the girls chatted at the table, pre-game.
(We were glad we brought a healthy food choice with the mountain of chips everyone brought.)
Kevin insisted on wearing his Colts gear – and dressing our daughter in hers, too – even though we were cheering for the 49ers for the night. ;)
Sorry… just had to show off my cute family there for a minute. Can you blame me??
Anyway – back to the food! I picked up some Classico Crushed Tomatoes on my last trip to Walmart. I used to use tomato paste in my recipe, but I LOVE the fresh tomato taste of the crushed tomatoes – I’m totally converted!
It’s awesome to pair with some lean ground turkey!
Here’s our game-winning recipe!
- 2 lb. Lean Ground Turkey (we use 99% Fat Free)
- 1 - 28 oz. can Classico Crushed Tomatoes
- 1 small onion, diced
- ¼ c. paprika
- 2 tsp. marjoram
- 1 tsp. chili powder
- 1 tsp. dry mustard
- 1 tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. pepper
- 12 Whole Grain Buns
- Because we're using lean meat, you can just add all the ingredients to a large skillet on medium heat. As soon as your turkey cooks all the way through (after about 10 minutes), simmer for an additional 20 minutes on low heat.
- Serve hot, or put it in to the crock pot on low heat for a buffet-style meal with whole grain buns!
Did you enjoy the Big Game on Sunday? What’s your favorite part every year? Is it the game itself, the commercials, or are you like me and just love the food and friends?

I just made turkey sloppy joes this past weekend for the family. They loved them. It’s so nice to eat something you love and know it’s a healthier version of what you’d normally eat.
