Good morning! I have a very simple wire-wrapped project for you today (in keeping with my quick-and-easy projects while I spend some extra snuggle time with my kiddos!) Anyway – if you’ve been thinking about trying your hand at wire-wrapping, this is a good piece of jewelry to start with: the wire-wrapped pendant.
What you will need:
- 18-gauge wire – I like silver-plated copper wire, but everyone has their favorite.
- Focal bead you love. This is a large dyed agate bead.
- Optional bead bail – I showed the one I used from a couple different angles. This isn’t a necessary component but it makes the pendant look more “finished”.
- Jewelry pliers – for wire wrapping I like a combination of my round-nosed pliers, nylon pliers, and wire cutters. If you don’t have all of these yet, you can make do with basic needlenose pliers and wire cutters, but these pieces are a good investment for most wire jewelry projects.
Cut 6-8 inches of wire, and create a small spiral “head” using your round nosed pliers. It only needs to be larger than the hole in your focal bead, to make sure your bead stays on – but you can make it any size or style you like.
Thread your focal bead on, and make your bail. I threaded this bail bead onto my wire loop, but a wire loop by itself is sufficient.
When you have created a loop (and included your bail if you are going to), all you have to do is wrap the excess wire around the “neck” of the loop you just created, and down onto your bead. If this is your first try, you may not get it “right” the first time around. There isn’t any specific technique to this type of wrapping, other than you will want to keep your wire snug to your bail and bead. Using the nylon pliers might be helpful (the nylon won’t mar your wire), or you may want to use your hands to wrap instead. If you don’t get it exactly how you want the first try, don’t get frustrated. A couple tried and you will have the hang of it!
Then, all you have to do is string it on a chain, and it’s ready for wear!
Do you do any wire-wrapping? Leave your tips in the comments!

I love this pendant necklace! It is perfect for what I have been looking for. Just reconnected with my niece after several years. She is fighting Cancer. We have the same gemstone which is garnet. I wanted to quickly make and send her something she can hold onto if she needs some “Aunt Ruth” courage

I applaud you for your directions that are easy to follow. I’d like to see your instructions on how to put end caps on stringed necklaces; especially multistran necklaces, and putting hooks on necklaces.
I’m pretty much self-taught, and I’ve learned through trial and error, but lately, moreso, from tutorials such as yours, but yours was so much easier to follow than most. Thank you for that, and I look forward to viewing more of your posts.

I got the agate beads at consumercrafts, com, but that was a few years ago and they no longer carry them. You can check out the selections at Goody Beads – theat’s where I shop for most of my jewelry supplies these days. They’ve got a big selection of gemstone beads at https://www.goodybeads.com/store/Beads-Charms-Gemstones.htm. Hope that helps!

You know, I’ve never tried jewelry making, but it looks phenomenal! You are clearly very talented!
Hey, I actually found your blog through a Google “how-to” search and I’m really loving all that I’m seeing so far. I have recently returned to blogging after being away for about two years. Due to all of my life changes in the past couple years, I decided to start fresh with a new blog. The design/layout is still in the making, but I’d love it if you came over to visit my little work-in-progress and let me know what you think!
Thanks Adrianne!
