Decor Pieces That Transition From Season to Season

Happy Monday, friends!  This weekend is Mother’s Day, and to celebrate that a little bit early, my mom came over and we spent some time together on a spring decor project.  Balsam Hill challenged us to create a spring theme from items that are traditionally held as winter decor pieces, and sent us a few of their products to review in exchange for our opinions about them, and we had SO much fun with it.

See, my mom and I talk about decor, crafts, DIY projects – but we’ve never really worked on one together, and it surprised me to realize that!  She is one to change many things seasonally, and I tend to choose a few evergreen pieces.  We’ve made suggestions for spaces when we visit each other, but we’ve never put our hands on the same project before.  This was the perfect opportunity for us, and we came up with a minimalist look for the mantel that incorporated what we agreed was “spring” to us both: butterflies.

(And of course, we’ve got the 3-generations-of-ladies photo out for it.)

I was initially skeptical about using pine greenery for spring, but the reason that we love it for winter so much is that it’s green year-round.  So we played with the idea of adding nests, eggs, and butterflies to Balsam Hill’s realistic Majestic Pine Wreath and traditionally-styled Crossbar Lantern.

We added a bit of blue dupioni ribbon, a nest with wooden eggs, and a little butterfly to the wreath, which is a beautiful focal point for above the fireplace.  But the lantern was the best part, take a look!

We used some moss garland and star string lights to support the nest and to give it a bit of height to fill the 22″ lantern.  And, of course, our butterflies.  I love this look so much!  The stars look almost like tiny flowers in there.  And let me show it to you when it’s lit up:

Almost magical, right?  I think my mom is already planning to “borrow” it for her house, we both loved it so much!  But it’s hard to blame her for wanting to – the quality of the products Balsam Hill sent is seriously unparalleled, and that’s hard to convey in photos.  The lantern has an iron base, so it’s certainly not going to tip over, and it’s constructed with vents and drainage to accommodate real candles, or to be used indoors or out.  The wreath is beautifully full and realistic – we’ll be using these pieces in our home for years to come.   Assuming my mom doesn’t take them for a season or three, I mean.  Haha.

We also put together this little video for me to introduce my mom to you guys, and she’s got a seasonal decor tip to share with me and with all of you in this 3-minute video.

Thanks for joining us today, and be on the lookout for us over at the Balsam Hill blog this week for Mother’s week!  While you’re there, be sure to check out the Mother’s Day giveaway and share your favorite mom-story with Balsam Hill for the chance to win one of three Balsam Hill gift cards (and trust me, you want one!)

As the brand ambassador for Balsam Hill, the use of the lantern and the butterflies on the wreath are a great way to signal the start of Spring. I agree with the quality of the lanterns. Sound and sturdy. Though they have a traditional feel, they are really timeless. The starry lights are magical, I agree. Thanks for sharing your idea!

Hello, and welcome! I'm Adrianne, an artist, author, designer, and blogger in mid Michigan. I work from home, chase my two kids, and this once-city-girl is learning how to care for chickens and adjusting to life out in the country. I have a compulsion for daily creativity... sometimes it's jewelry-making, paper crafting, metal stamping, mixing and baking, or giving new life to recycled items. But with 2 young kids, time is short! My goal here at Happy Hour Projects is to share projects and tips that you can do in an hour or less. The ideas you find here are designed to add a little creativity in your day, no matter how much (or how little) time you have!
