Housewarming Gifts for Their First Apartment

This post is promoted by Target.

One of the most exciting rites of passage is getting your first apartment.  I still remember mine – all 400 square feet of it.  When you first start out you’re focused on furniture, bedding, cleaning supplies, hopefully some curtains, and a set of dishes.  What you’re not prioritizing?  Artwork, bathroom accessories, and the things you need to throw a great housewarming party.  So, if you know someone heading off to their very first apartment, I’ve got a great gift basket idea that not only helps them host a great party to kick things off, but the pieces are fun and functional elements to fit with almost any decor.  You can bring a bag of party food to help out, too, and at Target, you can do it all for $100 or less.

When I’m choosing pieces for someone else, I typically go with warm neutrals whenever I can, unless I know them well, or I’ve seen their color scheme.  Consider options like wood and wicker, metals, whites, and glass.  I’ve put together a basket with items for storage, serving, and decor, and nearly all of them serve more than one purpose.

Food-safe decorative bowls and trays are serving essentials, and when not in use, can be set out on a table or bookcase to help it feel more homey.  Cereal or soup-sized bowls can be used for dips, nuts, or at any meal in a pinch!  A special carafe is great for serving punch or lemonade, and opting for a refrigerator-friendly design means that they don’t have to pick up a separate pitcher for refrigerating water later on.  And no kitchen can have too many towels, so you can add a pop of color to your gift in a small way that doesn’t lock them into a color scheme.

Each piece is useful individually, but put them together, and they’re everything you need to throw a special housewarming party!  A simple menu of sandwiches, chips, dips, nuts, and sweets is something anyone can assemble (or, as part of your gift, you can even bring the food).  This is the perfect kind of party for a low-maintenance menu. The mostlycempty frig will probably be happy for the leftovers, too.

If you know someone headed off to their first apartment, consider giving the gift of entertaining.  A great first like this deserves to be celebrated with friends and with family!

Hello, and welcome! I'm Adrianne, an artist, author, designer, and blogger in mid Michigan. I work from home, chase my two kids, and this once-city-girl is learning how to care for chickens and adjusting to life out in the country. I have a compulsion for daily creativity... sometimes it's jewelry-making, paper crafting, metal stamping, mixing and baking, or giving new life to recycled items. But with 2 young kids, time is short! My goal here at Happy Hour Projects is to share projects and tips that you can do in an hour or less. The ideas you find here are designed to add a little creativity in your day, no matter how much (or how little) time you have!
