Sticker Stories (For Little Kids with Big Imaginations)

My daughter loves a few things in life: the color purple, M&M’s, her stuffed frog, and STICKERS. So when I had the opportunity to try out some creative Playsets from PomTree Kids, I knew someone who would LOVE to play with them!

PomTree Kids playsets come with paper, foam and felt stickers and the mega kits have over 1000 craft pieces.  They’re all geared to children age 3 and up or 5 and up, depending on the skill level of the set.  Everything is either interlock or sticky back… no glue necessary (whew).  You can also combine any of the sets with additional coordinating sticker buckets so that your kids can stick and decorate to their heart’s content, and customize their project the way they want.  The themes and the way the pieces fit together emphasize problem solving skills and creativity.

You’re not limited to just the activities in the kits, though.  I made up a few simple sheets for my daughter to make her own stories, for sticker story time.

Sticker stories are really simple:  Get out some crayons and your PomTree Kids stickers, and let your child create a story!  Kids love books, and they are full of stories.  Just ask them!

It’s fun to see individual elements spark an idea.  Raya found some blue circles, and told me they were the wheels on the bus.  I let her stick them, and I helped her draw a bus.  (Please don’t judge my art skills, haha.)  She added passengers and more stickers, adding more detail to her story.  She found stars to put in the sky, and asked me to draw a moon.  When she was finished, we talked about what was happening in the picture, and wrote down the story to go along with it.

As we filled in a few more sheets, I asked her questions and she offered up details.  “Who is the letter to?” I asked.  “Owl!” she told me, then “Wait! It needs a stamp!”

Pretty soon, she was even “writing” the stories herself as she chatted away about what was happening in the story.  (“They want to bake a mushroom cake!”) Which made the writer in me awfully proud.  We collected the stories and put them in a 3-ring binder (with plenty of extra paper) to turn her stories into a real book.  The first thing she did was go show daddy what she made!

Sometimes just a little imagination is the best craft tool!
