Bird Nest Mason Jar Lamp

If you follow me over on Facebook, then you’ve probably seen photos of this little spring lamp I made from a mason jar already, for a challenge I joined over at Crafts Unleashed, the Consumer Crafts blog.

What do you think, do you like it?  See, the design team members were all given the same 5 craft components, allowed to add any other craft items, and create a spring project.  The items were chicken wire, sisal vine, burlap ribbon, mossy vine, and wooden pennants.  The challenge required us to use at least 3 of these components.

I turned my challenge components into a lamp, using these other craft items (note, these links will take you to the Consumer Crafts website in case you’re interested in making a purchase.  I’m not an affiliate and I don’t benefit from your purchase, but I do try to make it convenient to find the items I use in my projects, especially when they are particular, like this one.)

  • Wide Mouth Mason Jar
  • Wide Mouth Mason Jar Lamp Adapter Kit
  • Mossy Twig Vine Garland
  • Lamp Shade
  • Chicken Wire Netting
  • Wired Sisal Vine
  • 1.5 inch Wooden Eggs
  • Acrylic Paint ( I used a Light Blue)
  • Wire Cutters & Pliers

For the full step-by-step tutorial, I’m going to refer you to my original post at Crafts Unleashed.  But I’ll give you a quick explanation here too.

I made a little nest in the bottom of a mason jar, and screwed on a lamp adapter.  I’ve got a thing for making lamps.  It’s an obession, really.  Haha.

The most difficult part was adding the chicken wire to the shade.  As long as you keep it nice and taut (a pair of pliers will help with this), and trim off the excess wire, it makes for a really fun, rustic effect.

I LOVE how it turned out, and it’s currently adorning my desk.  What’s even more cool about it is, I can change out the contents of the mason jar anytime and change the whole look!  It’s seasonal decor at its best. :)

So go get yourself entered to win the $100 craft basket with a vote for your favorite spring project on the Consumer Crafts Facebook page!  Good luck!!

Hello, and welcome! I'm Adrianne, an artist, author, designer, and blogger in mid Michigan. I work from home, chase my two kids, and this once-city-girl is learning how to care for chickens and adjusting to life out in the country. I have a compulsion for daily creativity... sometimes it's jewelry-making, paper crafting, metal stamping, mixing and baking, or giving new life to recycled items. But with 2 young kids, time is short! My goal here at Happy Hour Projects is to share projects and tips that you can do in an hour or less. The ideas you find here are designed to add a little creativity in your day, no matter how much (or how little) time you have!
