Hey friends! I want to share a fun painted rocks project with you today that’s a great little boredom-buster, and fun to make on the snowy days ahead. If you make handmade Christmas gifts, pin this idea! It’s inexpensive and sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
You may already know, but I just wrote a book about painted rocks this year. You can find it on Amazon or your local major bookstore, and it also makes a great gift… ahem.
What you’ll need to make Painted Rocks Tic Tac Toe:
The following list contains affiliate links for your convenience when shopping for supplies or viewing more detail about the products I use. I do earn a small commission when you make a purchase through these links, and I thank you for supporting Happy Hour Projects! I only link to products I genuinely recommend.
- 10 Smooth Stones, approximately the same size
- Acrylic Paint (I’m using red, pale blue and white today)
- Brush-on varnish (you can also use varnish spray)
- Size 10 Flat Paintbrush
- Size 0 Liner Paintbrush
- Stylus
- 6×8 Burlap Drawstring Bag
- Red Permanent Marker
Begin by painting 5 of your rocks red, and 5 of them blue. This will take 2-3 coats of paint, allowing it to dry between coats. (You can speed this up with a fan or hair dryer, if necessary!) Paint the rocks on both the front and back side. (A note – if you can’t find smooth stones in your own yard, you can find them on Amazon or in many home improvement stores.)
Using a fine liner brush and stylus dotter, use white paint to add snowflakes to the tops of each rock. You can use the designs shown in the photos as inspiration, or google snowflake clip art to get some good, simple ideas!
When the rocks have completely dried, coat them with a brush-on varnish to protect them from chipping. If you prefer to use a varnish spray, that is fine! But I like brush-on varnish so that I don’t have to leave my workspace to find a well ventilated and protected area.
On a 6×8 burlap bag, use a ruler to draw a tic tac toe board. The bag serves both purposes – it’s for carrying, and for game play!
I hope you enjoyed this painted rocks tic tac toe project, and that you’re enjoying this holiday season. I’ll see you all again soon!

Great guide, thank you so much! I’m only starting my journey and just getting myself into painting so my snowflakes are kinda weird and don’t look as good as yours but I’m very happy with the overall results! I just need some more practice to get the precision that you have with your hand. Very excited, all these hand-crafts are such a fun thing to do, gets you occupied and the time flies you don’t even notice it. Spend almost two days doing this! Going to attempt again in the near future, hope to improve!
