Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Hey friends! Get ready for every Taco Tuesday with today’s recipe for homemade taco seasoning. I am sharing how to make this bulk taco seasoning recipe to prepare 6 batches at a time, which stores conveniently in a pint size mason jar and measures out into 1/4 cup scoops for each batch. Why should you make your own taco seasoning? There’s nothing artificial and no fillers when you make your own, and it just plain tastes better! You can adjust the heat level anywhere from baby spice to super-hot to suit your family’s tastes. And if you just like the convenience of just emptying a packet instead of dirtying every measuring spoon to measure each ingredient – this recipe is for you!

Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Also, how cute is this jar, right? That’s a sneak peek of what ELSE I’ve been working on during my time off. I bought a laser! I’m absolutely loving it, and this was one of the first things I engraved on a decorative jar. That way, it’s easy to know what it is, and how much to use.

Chili Taco Party Dip
Chili Taco Party Dip
Chili Taco Party Dip

This recipe uses 1/4 cup of seasoning per pound of meat, or replace one packet of seasoning in any other recipes you may be using (like one of my very first recipe shares here at Happy Hour Projects, Chili Taco Party Dip). Once you prep the whole jar, it’s just a scoop when it’s time to cook, which is convenient and it saves on dirty dishes and bringing out each jar individually when you’re ready to make tacos. I’m all about keeping things simple and easy! (Aren’t we all, really?) You can store homemade taco seasoning in an airtight container for up to a year.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Makes 6 batches – fits in a pint-size mason jar for easy storage

  • ½ c. chili powder
  • ¼ c. cumin
  • 3 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. black pepper
  • 4 tsp. paprika
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp. minced onion
  • 1 Tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp. oregano
  • 2 tsp. red pepper flakes

Measure all ingredients into a bowl, and stir thoroughly. This recipe makes mild tacos, but the beauty of making it yourself is that you can control the heat. For a hotter mix, just increase the chili powder, the red pepper flakes, or consider adding in up to a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Any of these ingredients can be adjusted up or down, depending on your family’s tastes.

I hope you find this recipe to be as convenient as I do! If you like make-ahead seasoning blends, be sure to check out my recipe for White Chicken Chili seasoning mix. See you again soon!

I’ve been buying packets for years, but the idea of mixing six batches into a pint mason jar and scooping 1/4 cup at a time sold me. The engraved jar is such a fun touch, too.

I like that you scaled this to six batches in a pint jar, since measuring individual spices every time is the real chore. One thing I wonder about is the minced onion and oregano sitting in the blend for up to a year, since dried herbs tend to fade faster than ground spices. Do you find the flavor holds up that long, or do you go through a jar quickly enough that it never becomes an issue?

I already keep a pint jar of taco seasoning in my pantry, so measuring 1/4 cup per pound of meat is exactly how I cook. Your engraved jar makes me want to label mine instead of guessing. I’ll try your six-batch ratio next Taco Tuesday.

Putting the amount to use right on the jar is a useful detail. A homemade blend loses some of its convenience if you have to look up the serving amount every time. Keeping the heat adjustable also makes a bulk mix more flexible than individual packets.

I love that this recipe makes six batches at once—storing it in a pint jar with 1/4 cup scoops means I can prep taco night in seconds without measuring out a dozen spices every time. The point about avoiding fillers really hit home for me since store-bought packets always have that weird chalky texture. I’ll definitely be dialing down the heat for my kids, but it’s great to know I can crank it up when it’s just for adults.

The bulk batch tip is genius—I never thought to store six portions in a pint jar and just scoop out a quarter cup when I need it. I also love that you can tweak the heat level, since my family fights over mild vs. spicy every single taco night. Definitely ditching the store-bought packets after trying this.

Making the seasoning in a six-batch jar is the part that makes this feel genuinely useful for weeknight cooking. I also like that the heat level is adjustable, because taco packets can lean salty or flat and it is much easier to tune chili powder, cumin, and cayenne when the blend is homemade.
