Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Hey friends! Get ready for every Taco Tuesday with today’s recipe for homemade taco seasoning. I am sharing how to make this bulk taco seasoning recipe to prepare 6 batches at a time, which stores conveniently in a pint size mason jar and measures out into 1/4 cup scoops for each batch. Why should you make your own taco seasoning? There’s nothing artificial and no fillers when you make your own, and it just plain tastes better! You can adjust the heat level anywhere from baby spice to super-hot to suit your family’s tastes. And if you just like the convenience of just emptying a packet instead of dirtying every measuring spoon to measure each ingredient – this recipe is for you!

Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Also, how cute is this jar, right? That’s a sneak peek of what ELSE I’ve been working on during my time off. I bought a laser! I’m absolutely loving it, and this was one of the first things I engraved on a decorative jar. That way, it’s easy to know what it is, and how much to use.

Chili Taco Party Dip
Chili Taco Party Dip
Chili Taco Party Dip

This recipe uses 1/4 cup of seasoning per pound of meat, or replace one packet of seasoning in any other recipes you may be using (like one of my very first recipe shares here at Happy Hour Projects, Chili Taco Party Dip). Once you prep the whole jar, it’s just a scoop when it’s time to cook, which is convenient and it saves on dirty dishes and bringing out each jar individually when you’re ready to make tacos. I’m all about keeping things simple and easy! (Aren’t we all, really?) You can store homemade taco seasoning in an airtight container for up to a year.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Makes 6 batches – fits in a pint-size mason jar for easy storage

  • ½ c. chili powder
  • ¼ c. cumin
  • 3 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. black pepper
  • 4 tsp. paprika
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp. minced onion
  • 1 Tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp. oregano
  • 2 tsp. red pepper flakes

Measure all ingredients into a bowl, and stir thoroughly. This recipe makes mild tacos, but the beauty of making it yourself is that you can control the heat. For a hotter mix, just increase the chili powder, the red pepper flakes, or consider adding in up to a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Any of these ingredients can be adjusted up or down, depending on your family’s tastes.

I’m so done with those sodium-heavy store packets! Making this from scratch is such a game changer. It feels like an escape road 2 much fresher, bolder flavors without all the hidden fillers. I love that I can customize the heat level for my kids too. Adding this to my permanent spice rack rotation—thanks for the simple and healthy swap!

I totally agree about controlling the heat! Store-bought taco seasoning is always either too mild or way too spicy for my kids. Speaking of family-friendly fun, we recently discovered this online game where you have to give clues on a spectrum to try and get your teammates to guess a secret target. It’s called Wavelength, and it is surprisingly fun and really gets you thinking about how other people interpret things.

I totally agree about the fillers in store-bought packets. It’s amazing how much better (and fresher) homemade tastes. This reminds me, I was just trying to figure out how much seasoning to use for a larger batch of tacos and needed to convert kilograms to stones to adjust the recipe I found online. I ended up using a handy little tool called “Kg to Stone Converter” to make it easier.

I totally agree about the fillers in store-bought seasoning! It’s crazy what they put in there. This reminds me — I was working on a video project last week where I needed to isolate the audio of someone speaking after they ate a taco. I ended up using a free tool that converts video to audio directly in the browser; it saved me from having to download any sketchy software.

Speaking of convenience, I recently needed to convert a bunch of taco night photos from WebP to PNG so I could easily share them with my family, and I found this free online WebP to PNG converter that did the trick instantly. No uploads or anything, which was perfect.

Thanks for sharing this taco seasoning recipe! It’s fantastic to have a homemade blend that’s so customizable. I can’t wait to try it and adjust the heat to my liking.

Hello, and welcome! I'm Adrianne, an artist, author, designer, and blogger in mid Michigan. I work from home, chase my two kids, and this once-city-girl is learning how to care for chickens and adjusting to life out in the country. I have a compulsion for daily creativity... sometimes it's jewelry-making, paper crafting, metal stamping, mixing and baking, or giving new life to recycled items. But with 2 young kids, time is short! My goal here at Happy Hour Projects is to share projects and tips that you can do in an hour or less. The ideas you find here are designed to add a little creativity in your day, no matter how much (or how little) time you have!
