Dutch Apple Pie

We picked apples last week to kick off this gorgeous fall weather we are having.  It was a great time watching my daughter get excited about picking them right off the trees, and I let her help me make pies when we got home.

Dutch Apple Pie at www.happyhourprojects.com

It was a huge mess, and worth every bit of sticky to have my daughter take an interest in helping me bake.  She stuck with me for the whole time, from peeling the apples to standing back while I put our pies in the oven.  I wonder if I’m raising a little foodie??

Apple Picking

Dutch Apple Pie is my very favorite, because it makes up pretty easily (especially if you use pre-made frozen crusts).  It’s especially awesome with super fresh MacIntosh apples inside.  Yummy!  Hope you enjoy!

Ingredients
  • 1 pre-made frozen crust, or use your own favorite family pie crust recipe
  • Filling:
  • 5 cups diced apples (peeled)
  • ½ c. sugar
  • ¼ c. brown sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • ¾ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • (Optional: if you have a very sweet apple, add 1 Tbsp. lemon juice. Our MacIntosh apples are already a nice tart apple, so I omitted.)
  • Topping:
  • ¾ c. flour
  • ⅓ c. softened butter (not melted)
  • ¼ c. sugar
  • ¼ c. brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375F degrees.
  2. Peel and dice your apples. This is, by far, the most time-consuming part of the recipe. Once this step is done, you are almost finished. If you are using large apples, 5 cups will be about 4 apples.
  3. Sift together all the dry filling ingredients. Then, stir in the apples. Mix it well.
  4. Add to prepared pie crusts. If you are using frozen crusts, you don't need to do anything special, you can use them straight from the freezer.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, sugars, and cinnamon for the topping. Cut in butter until it has a crumbly texture.
  6. Crumble topping evenly onto pie. I find that firmly packing a handful and crumbling it into small pieces gives the best texture, rather than sprinkling it on.
  7. Place pie on a foil lined sheet, and bake for 45-55 minutes. (The juice may boil and overflow, and it's much better to catch that on disposable foil!)
  8. Cool, serve, and enjoy!

What was your daughter’s favorite part of making the Dutch Apple Pie together, and do you think she enjoyed the process of baking as much as the final result?

Pinned, printed and posted on FB. This looks like a seriously great apple pie, Adrianne. I just purchased quite a few Gala at the orchard. Do you think those would work also? The only recipe I’ve made with apples is a simple apple crisp with Granny Smith’s years ago.

On second thought, just overnight one of your pies down to me in Indiana! Haha. I know nothing about making pies!

Haha. Gala are a lot sweeter, so I would definitely cut down on the sugar and maybe use a Tbsp. of lemon juice. I will often Google “best baking apples” to see what is good for pies, etc. You can find lists that take into account flavor and texture and say whether they are best for eating fresh or if they are also good baked, juiced, dried, etc.
