Embossed DIY Treat Boxes

Hey guys!  I have a fun new toy to share today – I recently upgraded my Sizzix Big Shot to the Big Shot Plus.  I can still use all my old dies, but with a 9″ cutting width, I can die-cut and emboss much larger areas than before.  Today I’m sharing how easy it is to make up embossed DIY treat boxes from 8.5×11 inch paper – just add a bit of ribbon for an instant gift box that works well for birthdays, weddings, and all kinds of special occasions.

If you’re used to the Sizzix Big Shot already – the Plus works just the same.  But check out the size – you can die-cut one box from one sheet of paper with no extra assembly necessary, which is nice – but check out the embossing folder!  It’s perfect for embossing larger areas (which, if you’re a paper crafter, you have likely wished for at one point in time or another).

Here’s everything you need to make this quick treat box, including affiliate links for the products I used today.  (Don’t forget, if you shop Sizzix.com, you can enter code SZB2015 to get 15% off your order at checkout, just for being a Happy Hour Projects reader!)

  • Sizzix Bigz Plus Gift Bag Die
  • Sizzix Textured Impressions Plus Embossing Folder – Botanical Swirls
  • 8.5×11 inch card stock (I used a 65# paper in periwinkle)
  • Quick-drying Paper Glue
  • Coordinating satin ribbon & gift tag (the Sizzix Framelits labels set is a great choice)

The treat bag die is perfectly sized for 8.5×11 paper – just place the paper on the die, sandwich it between two acrylic cutting pads, and roll it through your machine.  (It’s recommended that you use the soon-to-be released Sizzix Plus Crease Pad with this die to help get great score lines, but in a pinch, you can stick with the cutting pads.)

After die-cutting your box, you can emboss the entire thing in the Plus-sized embossing folders.  Then, just fold it, add a line of glue along one flap, and assemble the bottom.  Fill it with treats, tie it off with a festive ribbon, and you’ve got an instant treat box!

You can, of course, embellish yours in whatever style suits you best.  I love the embossing here because aside from waiting for the quick-dry glue, you can die-cut, emboss, and assemble this box in under five minutes, making it a smart option for parties, or any occasion where you need several boxes.  Plus, because it uses a paper size you can run through your printer, you can even customize it before cutting (oh, the possibilities)!

Hello, and welcome! I'm Adrianne, an artist, author, designer, and blogger in mid Michigan. I work from home, chase my two kids, and this once-city-girl is learning how to care for chickens and adjusting to life out in the country. I have a compulsion for daily creativity... sometimes it's jewelry-making, paper crafting, metal stamping, mixing and baking, or giving new life to recycled items. But with 2 young kids, time is short! My goal here at Happy Hour Projects is to share projects and tips that you can do in an hour or less. The ideas you find here are designed to add a little creativity in your day, no matter how much (or how little) time you have!
