Whiskey Barrel Planter Project (Part One!)

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

Okay, I know I’m just getting started, but I am WAY too excited about my first spring gardening project and I have to share!  I mentioned before that I am working with The Home Depot, and I have my spring gardening project all picked out… a whiskey barrel planter!

It’ a project I saw among the Spring gardening projects on The Home Depot website, and I fell in love with it.  I finally picked up my barrel, and IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL.  Just look at it!

The Home Depot Whiskey Barrel Planter #DigIn

It’s rustic and authentic, right down to the charred interior, and the hole for the cork.  Even my husband is excited about the project (although it could be the bartender in him – he did spend the drive home telling me all about how whiskey is made and aged, haha). ;)

If any of you are local to me here in Michigan – you know it’s been a cold spring so far!  The coldest I can remember, in fact.  This past week, we had floods, followed by hail and snow, but over the weekend it finally warmed up enough to give me a serious case of spring fever.  I talked my husband into heading over to The Home Depot with me for my supplies, because I’ve really been looking forward to getting outside and digging in the dirt.  I didn’t really have to twist his arm to go, though, haha.  We love trips to The Home Depot.  Everyone in the orange aprons are always friendly and lots of help.

(That’s always Raya’s favorite part of trips to Home Depot – the car-cart.)

We checked out the Garden Center, where we got great help from one of the associates.  He helped us find our favorite barrel planter, and gave us his recommendation on drainage gravel and potting soil.

I mentioned the cold weather we are still having – that’s delaying the blooms here in Michigan.  The Garden Center is finally just getting a few spring flowers in… in fact… this is all of them. ;)  So I will have to wait another week or two before I can start choosing my plants.

That’s okay, because I am not 100% sure what I want to plant in my container garden yet anyway, and it  gives me time to think it over!   I’m thinking maybe some blue flowers, or purple flowers.  What kinds of flowers do you love in your deck and patio planters?  What do you suggest for me this year to fill my gorgeous barrel?  Leave a comment below and tell me what you think!

I planted flowers in one of these barrels a few years ago. It was one of my favorite parts of the yard. Hope it warms up soon for you so you can plant!

If I have a barrel that big, I will plant tomatoes. I can keep them growing throughout the winter.

How fun! I have got spring fever big time–and this post is making it worse. I can’t believe we got more snow last night. Best of luck with this project!

I used to have a whiskey barrel planter a LONG time ago…..we have an alley on the side of our house and to make a long story short, someone ran into it and so no more whiskey barrel! However, I’ve been thinking about purchasing another one and your post just may be what it takes to get me to go to Home Depot and get one! :D

How exciting! I love barrel planters! I’ve been hunting for some (that aren’t ridiculously expensive) in my area! Are you going to be planting for you, or for Raya? If you plant for her, I love marigolds (because they’re tough little plants). Nasturtiums are also great (and you can plant from seed).

If you’re planting for you, then I’d do some ornamental grasses and trailing petunias with all sorts of deep jewel tones.

Can’t wait to see what you decide!

Hello, and welcome! I'm Adrianne, an artist, author, designer, and blogger in mid Michigan. I work from home, chase my two kids, and this once-city-girl is learning how to care for chickens and adjusting to life out in the country. I have a compulsion for daily creativity... sometimes it's jewelry-making, paper crafting, metal stamping, mixing and baking, or giving new life to recycled items. But with 2 young kids, time is short! My goal here at Happy Hour Projects is to share projects and tips that you can do in an hour or less. The ideas you find here are designed to add a little creativity in your day, no matter how much (or how little) time you have!
