Good morning! I’m more excited than I probably should be to share today’s giveaway with you. WiseDecor Decorative Lettering sent me a sample of their vinyl for the wall in my studio, and I have been dying to show you what I designed for today’s post.
Okay, too much? Because I think it’s so perfect! Perfect for me, anyway, and of course that’s what counts. I love having my own space and a place to feel sassy and express myself, and that space is my basement studio. It’s a place that is perpetually covered in mess (because I use it, obviously). I tidied up a little for you today to show off my wall, but this space will never, ever look like a magazine spread. I don’t even want it to, this is my real life – and it’s fabulous. Welcome.

Okay “magic” may be overstating it. But this is where I love to be, because it means I’m doing what I love to do! And getting a chance to let my studio walls reflect a little bit more of me makes my space that much more special and welcoming.
Now if you have looked into decorative vinyl at all, then you already know that there are several vinyl companies out there. One of the things that set WiseDecor apart for me when I placed my order was their website. Their online text previewer was SO helpful in visualizing what I wanted.
Because believe it or not, my creative vision is pretty much stunted when it comes to decor. I have lots of crafty vision, but when it comes to sprucing up a space, I need help! It’s one of those things – I know it when I see it… but I need to see it. The previewer lets you choose the color most similar to your own walls, then you type in what you want, choose a font, color, and size – and it will show you a preview and quote you a custom price based on the square inch size you set. You can see how this part can get addicting. :) You can also change the text color to one of over 40 choices. If you want to be sure it will match, color swatches are available for order beforehand, too.
If you aren’t sure what to say, you can browse their library of existing quotes and designs for inspiration for bedrooms, kitchens, nurseries or whatever space you want to personalize. And if you have an idea you don’t see listed, you can do what I did and have Wise Decor put your own idea in vinyl!
Now, if you haven’t worked with vinyl before – you don’t know what you’re missing. Applying it is easy – SO much easier than trying to paint. Your lines are clean and it’s easy to get it level. It’s also totally removable. So you can feel confident when you apply it – if you change your space later, or change your mind, just peel it off and order something fresh and new. So, for instance, when my son is old enough to have his room moved downstairs, he won’t have to be a unicorn. We can order him some new vinyl, and change the room just for him with no mess.
Installation can be intimidating but applying vinyl is actually an easy process. For large quotes like mine (it’s 4 feet wide), it’s easier for me to work with half the quote at a time. I tape it up with painter’s tape before I remove the transfer paper. After I measure it and take a step back to ensure it’s level, I remove half the paper backing, and stick that side to the wall, moving outward from the center. I have a tool that’s sort of like a spatula that I use when I work with Mod Podge projects that works beautifully for applying vinyl – but a credit card or firm pressure with just your hands works well too. Then, just remove the other half of the paper backing in the same way, so that your entire design adheres to the wall.
Then, peel the transfer paper back with slow, even pressure. You want to pull at the most extreme angle possible, pulling the paper back over itself. The letters will pop off the paper and stick to the wall. Go slowly – if any letters cling to the transfer paper as you go, re-stick them to the wall and peel it back again. You can smooth out any tiny bubbles that occur as you go.
In just 15 minutes, I applied a 4-foot custom decal to my wall in an overhead space, all by myself. If you can’t tell? I love, LOVE working with vinyl.
